Woodturning - One Big Ugly Burl into a dragon egg !!

That turned out really well. It will surely make for a nice centrepiece. Impressive!...

This gnarly burl was another field find , I was planning on making a vase but wasn't confident it would stay on the lathe while hollowing  as some of it was quite punky , so it ended up being quite a cool looking egg ...
I filled the voids with Alumilite Amazing clear cast epoxy resin
and coloured with Jacquard sapphire blue pearl ex powder.

Making Counterfeit Bananas

Wow. So much work went into producing these fake wooden bananas. It took him all week but the results were amazing. Woodworkers and artists alike would love this stuff...

In this video, I make fake bananas out of wood to trick my roommate.
I carved them out of a kiln-dried fir 2x4, using the bandsaw, Japanese hand saw, slick chisel, drawknife, and spokeshave. Then I paint matched a banana peel and painted them to be as realistic as possible. The texture and finishing was very important to selling the illusion that this was real fruit. This is the first time  I used Titebond as a wood finish, and I think it has a lot of potential.

Thinnest Wood Shavings You Have Ever Seen - Japanese (3 Videos)

Whoa that's thin! Real thin. The uploader recommended a second video explaining the importance of wood planer fine tuning so we've added that one also!...

Fast Fact: There's a unique wood planing competition held every year in Japan. (See final video)
The competition test competitors' skills by seeing who can shave off the thinnest piece of wood possible.
It seems pushing the limits of one’s abilities with their tools in Japan is not only entertaining - but quite impressive!

In November 2012 the wood planing competition was held in the port city of Uwajima, on the island of Shikoku, and the thinnest shaving was only 9 microns thick. A micros is one-thousandth of a millimeter…Just to give you an idea of how impressively thin that is, the average human hair is 100 microns across, a cloud water droplet is 10 microns in diameter, and a human blood cell measures 8-9 microns. Even more incredible is the fact that the record for the thinnest shaving currently stands at 3 microns.

Update: Original video no longer exists. Sorry! We hope this one will suffice...
