How high can you count on your fingers? (Spoiler: much higher than 10) - James Tanton

Let's say you actually use your fingers to count. How high do you think you could count up to besides 10 using your 8 fingers and two thumbs? Over a thousand? Two thousand? Actually, it's more. A lot more, as this video explains...

How high can you count on your fingers? It seems like a question with an obvious answer. After all, most of us have ten fingers -- or to be more precise, eight fingers and two thumbs. This gives us a total of ten digits on our two hands, which we use to count to ten. But is that really as high as we can go? James Tanton investigates.

Ghost Shark Caught on Camera for the First Time | National Geographic (2 Videos)

Fascinating!...

It took researchers seven years to come to the conclusion that what was captured on film was in fact a pointy-nosed blue blue ratish Hydrolagus trolli otherwise known as a ghost shark. - foxnews

The pointy-nosed blue chimaera, a species of "ghost shark," was captured on camera for the first time in 2009. Video courtesy Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute.

Previously discovered in the deep sea near Australia, New Zealand, and New Caledonia, researchers observed the pointy-nosed blue chimaera in the North Pacific for the first time in 2009. This footage was captured by a remotely operated vehicle as far as 6,700 feet below the ocean surface. Only recently were experts able to confirm that these fish were the same species as the ones that were previously discovered in the Southern Hemisphere. DNA sampling still needs to be conducted to be certain.

Video observations of Hydrolagus cf trolli, the pointy-nosed blue ratfish, from the Northeast Pacific ocean represent a range extension for the species and are the first ever of this animal alive, in its natural habitat. The species was originally described from specimens collected off New Caledonia in 2002. It was named in honor of Alaskan artist Ray Troll because of his fascination and appreciation for this strange group of fishes known as chimaeras.

Killer Whales Attack a Shark

... and it was all captured on drone...
A group of about 25 offshore killer whales eat a shark in Monterey Bay on Dec. 13, as seen from a drone camera.
The moment a pod of rare offshore killer whales tear a shark apart has been captured in amazing drone footage recorded in California’s Monterey Bay.
Slater Moore was on a boat with Monterey Bay Whale Watch on Tuesday when he spotted a rare glimpse of the offshore killer whales mid-feast, something the whales normally do deep underwater.
Two adult females can be seen with their calves feasting on the “squirming” shark. The feeding appears to be a teaching moment for the young whales with the adult letting go of their catch so the others can have some.
“We saw about 25 individuals and I was even able to get footage of them feeding on a Sevengill Shark with the drone,” Moore said. “These whales are typically smaller in size than the Bigg's or transient killer whale type and they had several very young calves with them.”
“All of a sudden one of them brought it up, brought up the whole shark,” Katlyn Taylor, a marine biologist who was on the boat said. “And it was still alive, it was squirming around.”

Monterey County Weekly

“Rarely seen offshore-type killer whales pass around a large sevengill shark, likely teaching their very young calves how to hunt sharks,” Monterey Bay Whale Watch wrote on its Facebook page.
“They’re kinda tricky animals to study,” Taylor says. “They hold their breath a long time, they swim really fast, they travel way offshore. That’s part of the fun though, you never know what’s going to happen.”

I captured this image during the migration of the sardines along the wild coast of South Africa. Natural predation, sardines are preyed upon by cape gannet birds and common dolphins. The hunt begins with common dolphins that have developed special hunting techniques. With remarkable eyesight, the gannets follow the dolphins before diving in a free fall from 30 to 40 meters high, piercing the surface of the water head first at a speed of 80km/h to get their fill of sardines.

The Obama's Final Holiday Card Photo - That Justin Trudeau Played a Part In...

Viral Randomness...

According to the chief White House photographer, Pete Souza, Trudeau was the visionary behind the photo that was selected for the Obamas’ annual White House holiday card.

This family. What can I say. What an honor to have photographed them for eight years. A couple of months ago, the Social Office came to me and said they were thinking of using a family photo for this year's White House holiday card. So I thought of Justin Trudeau. I know you're wondering what the heck I'm talking about. Earlier this year we hosted the Canadian Prime Minister for a formal State Dinner. Malia and Sasha attended as guests. Before the dinner, I did a family photo in the White House residence. But later, when the Trudeaus arrived, the two families spent some time on the Truman Balcony with their respective delegations. At one point, the Prime Minister asked if we could do a photo of he and his wife with the Obama family. Click, click, click. Then, he said I should do a photo of just the Obama's. I could have said, "sir we already did one before you arrived." But instead, I clicked off a few quick frames. And lo and behold, it was this picture that Justin Trudeau asked me to take which everyone loved as the choice for the 2016 White House holiday card.
A photo posted by Pete Souza (@petesouza) on

A message on the card reads: “As our family reflects on our many happy years spent in the White House, we are grateful for the friends we’ve made, the joy we’ve shared, and the gifts of kindness we’ve received. We wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a wonderful new year.”

RAW: Santa Describes Child's Last Christmas Wish Before He Dies in his Arms

You couldn't ask for a better Santa under the circumstances and you'll definitely shed a tear while watching this video. A very heartbreaking moment by a Santa describing a terminally ill boy's last wish before he died in his arms. A quoted video of the conversation is also included below...

He and his wife, who joins him as Mrs. Claus, even went to Santa school six years ago.
But a month and a half ago, he answered the call to grant what would end up being one child's final Christmas wish.
"He was more concerned about missing Christmas, than dying," Schmitt-Matzen recalled to WBIR 10News

Woman dragged off a Delta Flight (like a ragdoll)...

According to the uploader's website, a woman was dragged off Delta flight 2083 from Detroit to San Diego on December 12th, 2016 due to inappropriate check-in procedures...
“She didn’t check in with gate agent and walked right on. [The] woman blew by gate agent and didn’t check in because she wasn’t an early boarder and deserved overhead bin space. Colleague in back by her said she was mouthy and had a huge attitude. Police tackled her out of her seat and brought her to the ground. Not sure how she was subdued, some people speculated a taser.”

The woman was taken into custody following the incident.

“At approximately 8 this morning, Delta Air Lines contacted Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s police department requesting assistance with a passenger who would not comply with boarding and baggage check procedures at a McNamara Terminal gate,” Delta’s Erica Donerson said in a statement emailed to local station WWJ Newsradio 950.
“When officers arrived, Delta Air Lines stated the woman could not remain on board. Despite repeated requests by officers, the woman refused to leave the aircraft and had to be removed. She was arrested and charges are pending.”

Hilarious Trump Christmas Parody “It’s The Most Wonderful Time in 8 Years” (+ Whining Crying Rioting Hillary Millennial Theme Song)

Singer, Songwriter & Producer Dana Kamide created this masterpiece Christmas parody that will have you rolling in laughter and fully in the Christmas spirit! Dana wrote the lyrics and performs vocals on this wonderfully hilarious Christmas song which fully expresses how most of the folks in the USA feel right now! - - The song is Based on the song Andy Williams made popular in the 60's. This version also parodies the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" When George Baily begs God (through his guardian angel Clarence) to let him live again... This time he begs God to help Donald Trump "Make America Great Again"! A transformed Hillary Clinton makes a surprise appearance at the end so watch the complete video to get a great laugh! This parody is obviously from the prospective of a Trump supporter.

Crazy car pileup in Montreal. Bus Police and Snowplow!

All we need now is that Bennie Hill theme (see 2nd vid) playing in the background and we're all set!
Wow. Where do we start with this one. They call it the mother of all pile-ups when it comes to slippery, snow-covered road collisions.
This street in Montreal was a challenge not only for cars and buses but for all those who came to the rescue - police cars, snowplows and trucks! And it was all caught on camera by uploader Willem Shepherd who had just settled into his office that morning. It began when he saw a bus sliding slowly down the hill...

Got to work and there was an insane pileup happening outside.
Accident happened at 10am on Dec 5, Beaver Hall and Viger in Montreal

Willem Shepherd

The bus sliding down the hill eventually crashes into a group of four cars at the bottom. Moments later, a taxi narrowly avoided hitting the bus, but a pickup truck was not so lucky, and the bus lurched forward under the impact.
That wasn't the end of the madness.
Not even close.
Another city bus made its way down the hill, but, like most of the other vehicles on this road, it soon lost control.
That bus crashed into the truck, forcing it out of the way, and then hit the first bus still at the bottom of the hill.
A police vehicle trying to come to the rescue followed, sliding into the second city bus.
A snow plow came next, but even that truck couldn't maintain control on the slippery hill.
"Get out of the car!" someone can be heard shouting in the video as a snow plow careers towards the police vehicle.
(It eventually hit the police car.) - thespec

Moment Man Punches Kangaroo in the Face to Save Dog Being Strangled (2 Videos)

So that's what you do when a kangaroo has your dog in a headlock - punch him square in the face! It's no joke. This man really did punch the kangaroo in the face. The video has been viewed over 1M times already...

According to the Toronto Sun, it was zookeeper Greig Tonkins’ actual reaction when his dog, Max, got into a scuffle with the deadly ‘roo.

Daily News Updates

Man punches a kangaroo in the face to rescue his dog (Original HD)

Occurred June 15, 2016 / Outback Australia

Info from licensor: "A group of hunters got together to help a young cancer sufferer (terminal diagnosis) with his last wish of catching a 100 kg (220 pound) wild boar with his dogs. One day while hunting one of the highly trained dogs was chasing some pigs by scent and collided with a big buck kangaroo that then held and wrestled the dog by its protective gear (boars have tusks like knives), the owner was horrified that his dog or the kangaroo would get hurt and run in to save both parties. You can see the dog trying to escape, wanting nothing to do with the kangaroo. The big buck kangaroo releases the dog when the owner gets close but then moves in to try and attack the human. A kangaroo kick to the guts could easily disembowel the owner easily , so he backs off a couple of times giving the kangaroo some space but he eventually changes the roo's mind with a punch to the snout, as it kept coming forward. The punch stops the roo and makes him think about the situation, giving the owner and the dog time to disengage from the big wild animal and leaving it to hop off and I suppose wonder about what just happened. We laughed at the absurdity of the situation and at how unfortunate it was for the dog and kangaroo. Our 6 foot 7 inch friend felt no malice to the kangaroo but had to step in and fix a bad situation before it got worse. Young Kailem unfortunately lost his brave battle with cancer two days ago, so this hunt is part of the treasured memories his family and friends have. Having a dog get tangled up with a roo was never our aim or intention and we were happy no animals were hurt in the incident." -Greg Bloom

Google's New "Timelapse" Feature

Wow. Check out Fort McMurray, AB, Canada. Fascinating!

Google has recently released a Google Earth feature called, "Timelapse," which is a good thing in a bad way - since it allows users to see how the globe has changed over the past 32 years. In other words, how humans have slowly modified their space on earth.

Combining over 5 million satellite images acquired over the past three decades by 5 different satellites, Timelapse lets viewers witness the growth of areas in their region.

The global, zoomable video is made from 33 cloud-free annual mosaics, one for each year from 1984 to 2016, which are made interactively explorable by Carnegie Mellon University CREATE Lab's Time Machine library, a technology for creating and viewing zoomable and pannable timelapses over space and time.

We added a Timelapse for a place closer to home; Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga, which was quite interesting. But there were even more fascinating ones we have since discovered such as a lake in Bolivia vanishing or cities growing spectacularly in China and a few more!

Cool! Japanese Artist Turns Old TVs into Percussion Instruments

There are still old TVs kicking around?? You bet! And what is one to do with a bunch of old TVs you say? Why turn them into percussion instruments like Japanese artist Ei Wada did. He inadvertently discovered that old cathode ray tube television sets make great percussion instruments.
Today, his unique Braun Tube Jazz Band is famous the world over...

Ei Wada’s Braun Tube Jazz Band @ transmediale

Ei Wada's Braun Tube Jazz Band @ transmediale, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin.
"One day, a spectacular vision popped into Ei Wada’s mind. It was the image of abandoned electrical appliances being played as musical instruments in the streets of a city.
Some time later, he accidentally plugged a sound cable into a composite video connector port and the sound was rendered as an image. Seeing this he realised that re-recording the image with a camera and outputting it as an audio signal might reproduce the original sound. With this technique as a starting point, he set up pairings of tube televisions and PC-controlled video decks to correspond with the number of notes in a musical scale, creating a set of gamelan-like percussion instruments. Tapping the TV tubes produces primitive, cosmic electrical music. Paik meets the Theremin; Shannon meets McLuhan." (transmediale.de/content/braun-tube-jazz-band)
