Time has erased details of how exactly the graveyard appeared, but many believe it to be a legacy of World War II.

It is believed that the motors were left behind by US soldiers stationed in Belgium during the war.

Apparently, when the troops had to return home after the war ended, they were unable to afford to ship their vehicles back to the US, so they hid them nicely in the forest among the trees, hoping to return someday to collect them.

Years have gone by and no one has returned to collect their vehicle and in fact, others have added to it. These additions to the corroding collection, explains why many of these vehicles don’t actually fit the wartime story.

An article by Ronan Glon suggests a reason for these later additions, and in fact an alternative reason for the appearance of the cars in the first place.
According to the information from locals, the car cemetery has been closed in the past years due to concerns about environmental issues.
