Check out Japan's Ultra-Luxurious Sleeper Train (6 Photos + Video)

Talk about the ultimate travel experience...
This new luxury sleeper train, “Train Suite Shiki-shima” by JR East, made its debut on May 1.
East Japan Railway’s new Shiki-Shima suite will allow passengers a more leisurely journey through some of Japan’s most beautiful landscapes between Tokyo and northern Japan.

Of course, a ticket to ride on these 'penthouses on rails', doesn’t come cheap.

Prices start at JPY320,000 ($2,810) per person, making it one of the most expensive rail tours in Japan.

The dome cars, located at both ends of the 10-car train have large windows on the sides and ceilings and sofas allowing passengers to relax and enjoy the view as the train travels through mountain and coastal scenery.

The train’s 17 rooms – two large suite rooms in different sizes and 15 smaller rooms – can only accommodate 34 people in total. The rooms include beds, showers and toilets, and the most luxurious will even have bathtubs.

Each suite in the train has two floors, with a sitting room area and beds below.

The diner car offers food collected from areas the train travels through, and they will be served with nickel silver cutlery all created by Yamazaki Kinzoku Kogyo, known as the maker of cutlery used at a Nobel Prize award ceremony banquet.

The sofas at the lounge car use bentwood, made using the traditional technique of bending wood with steam, while carpets from Oriental Carpet Mills , known for its works at the Vatican Palace and Kyoto State Guest House, are used inside the train.

“We hope we can contribute to establishing a railway of a new era” through the new sleeper train service, said Atsushi Takahashi, a JR East official in charge of sales. We'd say they did!
